Stereotactic breast biopsy is a minimally invasive, highly accurate procedure guided by mammography and used to obtain small samples of breast tissue for evaluation. It is most helpful when the mammogram reveals clustered or linear microcalcifications, a new tissue distortion that was not present on previous mammograms, or a mass that cannot be felt or seen with ultrasound imaging. This type of biopsy uses mammogram images taken from three angles to aid in calculating the exact location for the tissue to be sampled. The procedure is performed by a Radiologist (a board-certified MD) who specializes in breast imaging. The tissue will be sent for evaluation by a Pathologist and results are generally available within three to five business days.
It is recommended that you discontinue the use of any Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Aspirin, fish oil or Vitamin E for five to seven days before your biopsy. If you are taking any prescription medications that affect your blood clotting abilities such as Plavix or Coumadin, please contact your physician to obtain permission to hold these medications for three to five days prior to your biopsy.
Wear comfortable clothing; only the top portion will need to be removed. A sports type bra is helpful to wear for the first 24 hours for your comfort. You should eat a light meal before your procedure.
Both our mobile coaches and our fixed locations provide the latest in cutting-edge, proven technology.
